THE CHARACTERIZATION OF COMBUSTION TO CARBONIZED COAL-BRIQUETTE FROM BUKIT ASAM

The characterization and the experimentation of carbonized coal-briquette had been
carried out to Bukit Asam coal for identifying the quality and the characteristic of its
combustion. The charcaterization was carried out by some analysis comprising of
proximate and physical analysis as well as the determination of caloric value and the
evaluation its quality relating to industrial standard; while the experimentation was
performed with the quantity of 1,2, and 3 kg of pyrolized coal-briquette and to analyse
the change of the temperature and the time of combustion.
The result of proximate analysis indicate that this briquette contain of moisture content
of 5.39 %,volatile matter of 22.15 %, ash content of 13.5 %, sulfur content of 0.50 % and
fixed carbon of 58.96 % as well as caloric value of 5,929 kcal/kg; while physical
analysis indicate that this briquette has compressive strength of 60 kg/cm2, density of
1.51 ton/m3 and the dimension of 51x49x39 mm3. This briquette is suitable according to
industrial standard due to the sulfur content is less than 1 % and the caloric value
greater than 3,500 kcal/kg and not suitable according to ash content is greater than 5 %
and volatile matter is greater than 18 %.
The result of the experimentation indicate that the quantity of coal briquette influence the
characteristic of combustion. The higher the quantity of coal briquette used in this
experiment the longer of combustion time at 400oC and the optimal result indicated by
the urilization of 3 kg with the combustion time at temperature 400oC of 160 minutes, the
high temperature of 520oC and the combustion time of 280-300 minutes.
